Website Hacking Info 101

If you are a website owner then you know that nothing is more horrifying than seeing a message saying that your website have been hacked.

There is a lot of possibilities as to why this happens.

Today we will look at the possible underlying circumstances as to why your website is hacked or is susceptible to website attacks and hacking.

Three things come to mind on why websites are usually hacked:

  1. To send out spam email\
  2. To gain access to your personal data, mailing list, credit card info, and others.
  3. Gain access to your site so that they can install malicious software that they can use your site.

The benefits of hacking for the hacker boils down to mass exposure, reduced overhead, tools, increased rate of success.

Why Hackers Hack?

Economic Gains

Obviously the first reason as to why a website gets hacked is purely economic. Hackers do this to make money from your audience.

One way they do is by the means of a Drive-by-download. This is the act of injecting your site with a malware hoping to infect your website visitors.

It works like this, whenever your readers visit your site, chances are they will be downloading a fake software that you recommended and that software is has only one command, to extract vital credit card info. The effects are rather devastating to say the least.

System Resources

Another reason why a hacker will hack your website is farming your system resources. This comes in the form of increased bandwidth and physical server use.

This is big business as a successful hack not only mean that the hacker has now increased bandwidth, but moreover, he can build a leasing environment off yours.

Hactivism

This is a bit tacky to quantify but nonetheless too real not to consider. If nothing else, some hackers derive maximum pleasure and satisfaction from being able to take control over a site, in this case, a government site to protest or show their agenda.

They then show this to their peers and use as bragging rights. One famous example is a group of hackers who call themselves “anonymous”

Boredom

Yes, some hackers, out of sheer boredom (for having too much time on their hands) with nothing better to do will actually find hacking a site the actual cure for their boredom.

In closing

Being hacked is not a pleasant experience. It will demand your full attention if you want to restore your site and remove the malware installed.

In our next installment I’ll present some anti-hacking and security guides that you can use to avoid being hacked again or hacked in the first place.

7 Social Media Marketing Mistakes

Hi everyone!

In the early stages of my social media marketing campaign I often struggle to find the most applicable and most effective strategy or strategies that I can use.

marketing planThis would always result to falling into a pitfall and you know what’s even worse? I’d fall over and over into the same ditch time and again.

It’s definitely easy to mess up and get lost into messing up again and again.

Thankfully I was able to rectify my mistakes and was able launched a more streamlined and effective social media marketing campaign.

Now I’ll be sharing the mistakes I did before in the hope that you’ll steer clear of them.

Here it goes.

Social Media Marketing Mistakes

Focusing on Number of Followers

followersTry to target connections that will be beneficial to your business. It’s them you want to focus on anyway.

Don’t just click and connect.

Be forward-looking. Connect with those that you can do business with in the future.

Irregular Posting of Unrelated Content

More than 170million people buy product online every year. Posting unrelated content without irregularity will only leave you in the dust and in the dark. Moreover you can actually even lose your followers this way.

Forgetting to Convert Followers into Paying Customers

conversionDid you know that roughly around 12 percent of total social media viewers that encounter your ads are likely to buy?

A highly shared post means nothing if it’s not asking viewers to make the sale.

 No Strategy

Operating an online business without any social media strategy is like fighting a battle with one hand tied behind your back. I can’t overemphasize the importance of having an active social media marketing campaign.

Spamming

Self-explanatory I suppose? Spamming is really not a strategy anyway. It’s more akin to being a nuisance.

Announcing the Same Message on Multiple Channels

multiple channelsMuch like having your own branding concepts, different platforms have their own distinct way of getting the message across their respective community.

If you want to be effective on this, then learn how each platform execute theirs.

You might piss off your most loyal followers having multiple channels if they see the same exact message promoted across multiple channels don’t you think?

Brand Has no Personality

brand personalityWhether you have a smiling clown, or an old man with a mustache that defines your brand, still your brand has to have its personality.

This will separate you from the “faceless, lifeless and bland crowd”. A logo or a symbol will instantly inform your viewers who you are and what your business is all about.

There you go folks!

Have fun with your social media campaign!

7 Common SEO Mistakes Every Web Marketer Should Never Do

Hi everyone!

Let’s face it, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) technique is not EASY for everyone. While some guys may be good at it, most of us newbie marketers are left groping in the dark and biting our nails.

Still in keeping with my ongoing objective of helping you out, I’ve recently updated my list of the MOST common SEO mistakes that newbie marketers often do and how to avoid them.

7 Common SEO Mistakes

Keyword Stuffing

keywordThis refers to unnaturally padding your blogpost with keywords that may or may not be relevant to the subject at hand.

This is unethical and can often lead to your site’s being flagged down and worse –penalized by major search engines!

Being Spammy

spammyAgain, loading your blogpost with keywords but with little content to back it up is like shooting an arrow to the moon.

It’s unrealistic and will get you nowhere. You need to be smart with the use of keywords even if they’re on-topic.

There should be enough word count to make it really count. One word of advice though, be sure that it reads smart and loaded with real info. Word count alone will not cut it as well.

Focusing on Keyword Density

densityIf you’ll notice, there’s already a recurring theme here – the use of keywords. While keywords are really essential it’s not smart to overuse them.

Keyword density refers to the number of times a specific keyword is repeated or appears in a blog post. Don’t aim for a certain number density anymore like what was acceptable a couple of years back.

The search engines are evolving in an effort to weed out the phonies. It is outdated and doesn’t work anymore.

Spamdexing

dexingSpamdexing involves repeating an unrelated phrase or phrases in an effort to trick the search engines.

Well guess what, search engines nowadays have a better way of detecting whether or not the content of a blogpost is relevant to the search term or not.

Beware, the moderators will be inclined to remove you from the search engines when they discover that you are actually spamdexing.

Link-bait-and-switching

linkLink-bait-and-switching is a technique whereby a link is added to a word and that link leads your reader to something totally unrelated. This is also unethical and will cause your readers to mistrust you.

Not being Patient

“Patience is a virtue” so goes the saying. It’s true. Even with this technological advancement, patience still has its rewards. Proper SEO can’t be established overnight. You need to give time to those web CRAWLERS to find your content and establish your online reputation.

Shallow Content

Always write content with value. Search engines have a way of telling whether what you are actually putting out is all fluff and no real value. Your content must have value to back up the keywords you use.

5 Tips on How to Write a Killer Headline

Headline titles are more important than most writers would care to assume. In fact, the viability of having your article read lies on how catchy your headline reads. The catchier the better.

So how do you do it?

skyOne important factor to remember is to always ask yourself “why would I want to read this article?”

If you can answer that convincingly with your headline, go on. If not, write another one and another until you have in your hands the best possible version.

I’ve compiled 5 do-able and practical tips to help you write a catchy and killer marketing headline. This is in accordance with my ongoing effort to help you become a better online marketer.

5 Headline Tips and Tricks

Use Numbers

eThe mind can easily “see and recognize” figures. This spatial recognition is so effective that wherever you go, numbers will almost always jump out instantly. Look around you and you will notice that numbers are everywhere.

For best practice, use somewhere between 1 to 5 to enumerate your headline with tips or what-have-yous, it works.

Use Picturesque or Interesting Adjectives

adA headline without any adjective is doom to fail. Use adjectives that are easy to understand and must be catchy. Some of these are the following:

  • Essential
  • Incredible
  • Free
  • Easy
  • Important
  • Fun

Use Rationale

This is effective if you are going to do a list post. You can use the following words.

  • Facts
  • Ideas
  • Lessons
  • Principles
  • Reasons
  • Secrets
  • Tricks
  • Ways

One cautious word of advice – please don’t ever use the word things. I know you can do a lot better than that.

Use Trigger Words

What, why, who, when, and how are considered as trigger words. They define your headline and immediately “cast the net” on the target audience. Trigger words are effective when you are trying to persuade or you want to enable your readers.

Make a bold Promise

promAlways remember your initial and most important goal – have readers read your article. Readers will always ask “what’s in it for me?” If you can successfully address that query, you have reached your goal.

Making a promise is a sure way to catch their attention. Make it bold or audacious but not to the point that you are fooling them. That’s a major no-no.

Likewise you can promise your readers about something valuable. It can be learning a new skill, trying out a new brand of soap or asking him to do something for the first time and what they will get out from it.

They key point to remember is that you are asking your readers to read your article.

Finally

Now, let’s put our headline writing formula to the test, try this:

50 Ways to Leave your Lover – yeah it’s a song I know, but it’ll real catchy.  How about “How to lose 2 kilos in 2 weeks”.

All in all, you can’t force your readers to read something that is really boring. They want to be informed and entertained. Make it worth their time. Start with the headline.
