just the facts imageTo avoid sounding like you actually are bragging, offer a straightforward description of your achievements, skills and probably even endorsements. Don’t forget to add awards and past successes.

What usually happens is that some people tend to overdo or hype up their about us page. This might actually put off readers especially those discerning and tenured ones.

Ease off on the “gas” and just state the facts as they are. Avoid too much sugarcoating or window dressing.

Who is Your Target Audience?

target market imageIt’s smart to actually visualize who your readers are going to be. Target your prospective customers. Try to construct an about us page that is geared towards this focus market. Give them the “impression” that they “accidentally” found you.

Just as any other form of media is designed with the viewers in mind, your about us page should speak the language of your visitors.

Get Personal

personal imageGetting someone to write the about us page for you may not actually work in your favor because it might come off as sounding stiff and insincere.

Why? Because most probably he will be using the second person’s point of view.

Besides, no one knows what you do or your business better than YOU. So, sit down and start constructing what you want your visitors to know.

Use a conversational and friendly tone, this will attract readers better than by using a corporate type tone. Speak with passion about what your mission is. Always be sincere and imagine addressing just a single reader – in short be personal.

Describe your Values

values imageYour values will immediately inform readers if you are worth doing business with – not just your skills and experiences.

Explain your values. Moreover, if you have a charitable fund drive in your business, mentioned it here as well.

Mentioning it here means this is NOT just all about making yourself filthy rich but that you actually have a program for your corporate social responsibility.

An about us page is your readers’ peek into THE REAL you,  so make it count. There it is, when constructing your about us page, it pays to consider all these factors.

This is unethical and can often lead to your site’s being flagged down and worse –penalized by major search engines!

Being Spammy

spammyAgain, loading your blogpost with keywords but with little content to back it up is like shooting an arrow to the moon.

It’s unrealistic and will get you nowhere.You need to be smart with the use of keywords even if they’re on-topic.

There should be enough word count to make it really count. One word of advice though, be sure that it reads smart and loaded with real info. Word count alone will not cut it as well.

Focusing on Keyword Density

densityIf you’ll notice, there’s already a recurring theme here – the use of keywords. While keywords are really essential it’s not smart to overuse them.

Keyword density refers to the number of times a specific keyword is repeated or appears in a blog post. Don’t aim for a certain number density anymore like what was acceptable a couple of years back.

The search engines are evolving in an effort to weed out the phonies. It is outdated and doesn’t work anymore.

Spamdexing

dexingSpamdexing involves repeating an unrelated phrase or phrases in an effort to trick the search engines.

Well guess what, search engines nowadays have a better way of detecting whether or not the content of a blogpost is relevant to the search term or not.

Beware, the moderators will be inclined to remove you from the search engines when they discover that you are actually spamdexing.

Link-bait-and-switching

linkLink-bait-and-switching is a technique whereby a link is added to a word and that link leads your reader to something totally unrelated. This is also unethical and will cause your readers to mistrust you.

Not being Patient

“Patience is a virtue” so goes the saying. It’s true. Even with this technological advancement, patience still has its rewards. Proper SEO can’t be established overnight. You need to give time to those web CRAWLERS to find your content and establish your online reputation.

Shallow Content

Always write content with value. Search engines have a way of telling whether what you are actually putting out is all fluff and no real value. Your content must have value to back up the keywords you use.
